Sanjay reckons 37 years’ practice at the Mauritian Bar. He heads a multi-disciplinary Chambers. He appears regularly before the Supreme Court, and has argued major cases before the UK Privy Council. He has assisted his clients in complex litigation, major transactions, arbitrations and high-profile criminal cases. The Full Bench of the Supreme Court commended Sanjay for his advocacy in a constitutional matter: “We were impressed by the quality and depth of his address. We wish also to commend the attention and care shown in preparing the ‘Skeleton Arguments’ which, we feel, can be considered a model.”

Sanjay is an accredited arbitrator with the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce & Industry. He is a former director of the State Bank of Mauritius and was also the Chairman of Air Mauritius. He also presided the African Airlines Association and served on the Board of Governors of IATA.

Sanjay was a part time lecturer of Criminal Law at, and was a member of the Board of Examiners of, the Council of Legal Education for 20 years. He now lectures Criminal Procedure and Ethics on a part time basis at the Institute for Judicial & Legal Studies (IJLS). Sanjay wrote the Mauritius Chapter of a book entitled ‘Speaking Freely’ on ‘Expression & The Law in the Commonwealth’. In his Preliminary Report on ‘Media Law & Ethics in Mauritius’ in April 2013, Geoffrey Robertson, Q.C referred to Sanjay’s book as a neat summary of the present media law.

Sanjay graduated from the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE) in 1983. He was called to the Bar of England & Wales, as a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple in 1984. His father, Somdath, was also a barrister from the Middle Temple. Sanjay was appointed Senior Counsel in 2010. In 2021, Sanjay was appointed Chairperson of the Complaints & Ethics Committee of the Mauritius Bar Association, of which he was elected Chairman in 2004.
